Proteomics research specializes in characterizing isolated proteins or a protein complex by mass spectrometry, studying a protein extract by electrophoresis or chromatography, or in quantitative protein expression profiling.

Our facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art mass spectrometers, robotics for mass spectrometry sample preparation, small and large format two-dimensional gel electrophoresis units, and milli-, micro-, and nanoflow HPLC units for multi-dimensional liquid chromatography.

Standard two-dimensional gel electrophoresis can be enhanced by labeling the protein extracts with different fluorescent tags prior to electrophoresis, and running a mixture of the extracts within the same gel. In addition, two cell extracts can be compared using isotope-coded affinity tags (ICAT). The ICAT technology involves labeling the protein extracts with tags differing by 9 amu and using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to detect up- and down-regulated proteins.
